Almost 1,000 students of German gathered in yellow “Deutsch! Ja! Ja! Ja!” sun visors at Melbourne’s Federation Square on July 27th 2007 to enjoy the German Day Out. Some school groups had spent the morning following various German language-trails in the CBD designed by teachers of German, and a large number had attended a screening of a film set in German-speaking Switzerland at the ACMI cinema (part of the Melbourne International Film Festival). Students and the general public checked out stands set up by various exhibitors including the German Departments at Melbourne and Monash Universities, and played Tipp Kick or enjoyed tucking into Wurst or Bretzels.
The German-Australian electronic pop duo Dyko performed on stage, singing some of their songs in German and some in English.
During the event the Goethe-Institut/AGTV Year 10 Awards were presented by the Director of Melbourne’s Goethe Institut. The main award of a 3-week language course in Germany went to a student from Dimboola Memorial SC, and two additional prizes of a language course at the Goethe Institut in Melbourne went to students from Mullauna College and from St Leonard’s College. The AGTV presented each with a super-sized German dictionary to help with their learning of German.
German tourists wandering through Fed Square were keen to get their hands on one of the “Deutsch! Ja! Ja! Ja!” sun visors!
Thank you to everyone who played a part in organising the day!
