Manager, Advanced Product & Technology Development, Robert Bosch (Australia) Pty. Ltd., Clayton
Liebe Freunde der deutschen Sprache,
I recently spent 2 years in Stuttgart at the main Research and Development centre for Bosch.
Naturally, German was the native language and it was expected that I communicate in German. Since I had not learnt German at school, or undertaken any language training prior to the assignment, it was a difficult & often frustrating task.
However, I have been surprised how useful my new-found knowledge of this second language is. Not only in the workplace, but also when travelling in countries other than Germany. I have often found that even when English is not possible, German is.
The key to successfully learning a new language is not being afraid to use it.
Pat Tucker, Manager of the Human Resources Department at Robert Bosch Australia, writes:
"German language skills are particularly important for employees
of Robert Bosch and other German multi-national companies and I would
encourage students to develop these skills from an early age. They provide
job applicants with a decided advantage, particularly in the engineering
field, where many of our projects are run concurrently with our German
head office. In this context, language skills break down the barriers
and make work easier and more effective."
